A technology involving both GPS and mobile phone technology for motorist convenience.
seat belt pretensioners
Devices that release slack to prevent injury in the event of collision.
seat belt retractors
Devices that pull back seat belts to their storage positions.
second-generation airbags
Car front airbags that are released with less force and thus less chances of injury.
security deposit
A sum of cash required by the seller or lessor to safeguard against nonpayment.
semi-independent suspension
Single axle rear suspension that allows twisting motion for simulation of independent suspension.
sequential fuel injection (SFI; a.k.a. fuel injection, electronic fuel injection, EFI)
Fuel supply system that improves the fuel efficiency, emission and overall performance of a car; a replacement to a carburetor.
shock absorber
The part of suspension that controls the upward and downward movement of the car's wheels.
single-payment lease
A lease that allows consumers to pay all lease fees and payments at the beginning of a lease including the down payment, usually with post dated checks.
single-point fuel injection (SPFI; a.k.a. fuel injection, electronic fuel injection, EFI)

skid plate
A steel plate bolted to the base of the car's body, usually underneath it; used to protect upper area from damaging elements; most commonly used on offroad vehicles.
space frame
A car frame made of tubular metal.
speed-sensitive volume
An automatic system that increases or decreases volume according to the noise created by the car on different speeds.
springs
That which supports a car's weight and also acts as a shock absorber
StabiliTrak (a.k.a. electronic stability system)
An antilock braking system (ABS) that uses computer control to keep a vehicle on the intended course
standard
Features included in the base price of a car (various parts and peripherals).
steering feedback
The road transmitted through the steering wheel to provide driver a feel for the terrain.
subvented/subsidized lease
A lease subsidized by an automaker making a car more attractive to consumers.
SULEV
Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle
supercharger
A device that increases a car's power by pumping air into combustion chambers; works via use of a chain, belt or a gears.
sway bar(a.k.a. stabilizer bar)
A steel bar that connects opposite wheels and the components found in between; used as a safety precaution against body roll.
